If between 6am-10pm take the bus. 144 baht and two hour drive. Catch the bus on the bottom floor of the airport exit # 8.
If after 10pm - take a meter taxi if availble. You can also call private taxi. Make sure you do this ahead 1-2 weeks from your arrival. Expect to pay 1200-2000 baht.
If after 1:00am - you can stay a few hours at the airport in the Boxtell. Boxtell is a sleeping pod below the first floor. Expect to pay. 1200 - 1800 baht. Get up early and take the bus.
Regardless of the time you land there will be an exchange for your money at the airport. Just after you baggage claim you will see several exchange. Rates will vary but keep in mind you will find a better rate once you get to your destination. Exchange what you need at the airport for a few days then exchange at ATM or booth in the city you're staying. TT exchange (yellow booth) is pretty good.
I recommend using credit card only at hotels and ATMs when getting cash.
Use cash at bars, resturants, etc... Cash is king!
Credit Card fraud is the biggest scam when travelling. Do not leave your card with anyone and only use when it's in sight.
Best Cards to use are travel cards that give points and rewards for international travel. Check your card for exchange and cash rates as some will add on additional fees.
